Service Description

Monday evenings (6:30pm-9pm) Whether you've always dreamed of a one-of-a-kind bedside lamp, a handmade sconce to set the mood, or a collection of cozy candle holders for your dinner table, this 6-week handbuilding class is all about shaping light from the ground up. Week 1: Pinch Pot Candle Holders We'll kick things off with one of the most satisfying beginner projects: a matched set of pinch pot candle holders. We'll cover wedging and weighing clay to make two consistent pieces, then demo building a simple stem on the table and attaching a small pinch pot on top to hold a candle. Every step is demonstrated twice so students can follow along with confidence. Week 2: Slab Sconces This week we move into slab work. We'll cover the slab roller, talk through ideal thickness and drying time, and plan out individual sconce designs before building. The main technical focus is creating a wall hanging element on the back of the sconce that is both functional and clean. Week 3: Coiled Lamp Part 1 The most ambitious project of the series starts here. We'll demo coil building and the extruder, then focus on creating a solid lamp base with a properly sized hole to fit the electrical lamp element. We'll talk through shrinkage and how it affects the fit of components, then begin layering, smoothing, and flaring coils to build the body of the lamp up. Students will finish at least half of their lamp this week. Week 4: Coiled Lamp Part 2 We'll pick up where we left off and finish the lamp. The focus this week is on properly finishing the top of the lamp to ensure the electrical element fits well once fired. Students will complete their coiling and do any final shaping before the piece dries. Week 5: Surface Design With all pieces built, this week is dedicated entirely to surface decoration. We'll do an overview of techniques and students will choose what works best for their pieces. Options include underglaze illustration, sgraffito, oxide washes, and slip application. A great week to slow down and add personality to everything you've made. Week 6: Glaze Party Open glazing session with demos on glaze application and finishing as needed. All work must be glazed and placed on the glaze cart by the end of class.
