Intro 2.0: What Lies on the Surface
Because a beautiful pot deserves a beautiful surface!
Service Description
Sunday mornings (11:00-1:30pm) This 6-week class is all about what happens after the throwing is done. We'll spend one week getting your hands back on the wheel and building a collection of forms to work with, and then dive deep into the world of surface decoration, exploring techniques that will completely transform the way you think about clay. Bring a sketchbook, bring inspiration, bring your Pinterest boards and your wildest ideas! Week 1: Throwing Refresher + Setting Intentions Throwing demo and open work time to build a collection of forms to decorate throughout the course. Discuss the importance of planning surface decoration before you throw for things like wall thickness, surface texture, and form shape all affect what techniques will work best. Introduce the idea of keeping a sketchbook or inspiration board. Week 2: Subtractive Techniques Demo sgraffito, carving, texturizing, and stamping. These work best on leather-hard clay, so students will decorate pieces thrown last week while throwing new forms for upcoming weeks. Week 3: Slip & Inlay Techniques Demo Mishima (inlaying slip or underglaze into carved lines), slip trailing/piping, and nerikomi (marbled clay). Great middle-of-the-series week since pieces need to be at the right stage of dryness. Week 4: Painterly Techniques Demo underglaze illustration, washes, water etching, and transfers. This is a great week for students who feel more confident with 2D mark-making and illustration. Week 5: Resist, Stencil & Mixed Media Demo wax resist, sticker/stencil/vinyl methods, and mixed media components like thread, leather, or wood accents. Talk through what can survive the kiln vs. what gets added post-firing. Week 6: Glaze Party + Potluck Open glazing session with demos on glaze illustration and layering as needed. All work glazed and loaded onto the glaze cart. Celebrate!
