Beginner/Intermediate Level Handbuilding Class

355 US dollars
1553 Platte St, Unit C100

Service Description

Monday evenings (6:30pm-9pm) with Jennifer This 6-week class is all about building a garden stack you'll be excited to show off in your yard all summer long! Each week we'll tackle a new handbuilding skill to help build your stacks: pinch, coils, and slabs to create a collection of stacking pieces with holes in the top and bottom, then bring them to life with surface design and glaze. Week 1: Pinch Techniques Overview: Students plan their entire garden stack to scale, then learn pinch techniques and build their first pieces, including the solid topper. Week 2: Coil Techniques Overview: Using their week 1 plan, students build the taller middle elements with coils: rings and open vessel forms whose centers become the rebar channel. Emphasis on building vertically and drying to build taller. Week 3: Slab Techniques Overview: Students build pieces using slab construction techniques Week 4: Surface Design Techniques Overview: Pieces are leather-hard to nearly dry — the ideal window for surface work. Students decorate their components. Week 5: Glaze demo + start glazing first few pieces Overview: Students should work on wrapping up any remaining pieces they want to include in their stacks, if some pieces have come out of the bisque firing already they can begin glazing this week. Glaze demo should be done this week so that Week 6 has no new information and students can focus on getting all their work done! Week 6: Glaze Party + Potluck Overview: Glaze and finish demonstrations as needed. All work must be glazed and set on the glaze cart to be finished.
